This is the 3rd year in a row that Jason has designed the tours for We Day – a star-studded youth empowerment celebration featuring a diverse mix of incredibly motivating speakers, entertainment and live music by artists including The Band Perry, Tyler Shaw, and Francesco Yates.
Justin Trudeau made his first public appearance since getting sworn in as Prime Minister at the Ottawa show; other speakers included inspirational young people and celebrity ambassadors like Henry Winkler, Chelsea Clinton, Rick Hansen and Chris Hadfield.
With 14 trucks worth of stage, lighting, audio and video, the show this year is not only big but challenging as well, being staged in-the-round.
Working in the round poses many logistics challenges – from having to light 360 degrees when arenas are traditionally designed for an end stage, to the different scoring clocks and arena screens making a lot of unusable space. Add to that the fact that no two arenas are the same, so the rigging and positions for every element are completely different for every show.
As you can see from the gallery below, you’d never know, and that’s all part of the deal.

Billed as “Canada’s largest electronic music festival”, the event was held at The Flats at Ontario Palace, Toronto on June 28 and we’ve just updated our portfolio to include a gallery showcasing our designs at the event.
Elements included in our production design were the Dreams Stage, Echo Beach Stage and the Bacardi Untameable stage, plus we also designed the site lighting for an integrated look throughout the site. The Dreams stage also featured an automated motor system so the stage could evolve from artist to artist.
Despite disappointing weather conditions meaning a fast design change on the fly after a large storm blew through, the event was a huge success – see the full gallery of pictures from the event in the Digital Dreams 2015 gallery.
The 2014 We Day Tour featured 15 shows across North America and the UK, and Electric Aura Projects’ Jason McKinnon was the lighting designer for the North American tour, and the production designer for the UK show.
Another successful Canada Winter Games has come and gone. The Electric Aura team was proud to be working once again with PRP providing Production & Lighting design for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
The Festival is over for another year and it was a huge success. Jason McKinnon was engaged again to be the Lighting Designer which encompassed over 81 acres of festival grounds. With 4 stages, 4 unique areas, many VIP activations and massive grounds to be lit it was a huge undertaking with over 6 months of pre planning. Artists such as Bruno Mars, Eminem and Arcade Fire were the headline bands but there was so much more to experience than just one main stage. LED lighting and over 8000 feet of festoon were strategically placed throughout the site to continue the stage vibe across the entire festival grounds which certainly created a pleasant atmosphere as you wandered across the site at night.
